Top Ten Queer Films
May 10th 2008 15:08
Gays, lesbians, drag queens . . . "queer" films explore gender and sexuality and as requested by a fellow film reviewer i have strained my brain and come up with my personal favourite TOP TEN Queer Films . . . there are so many great queer films to choose from, and many more films with great gay characters, but the criteria i used to select the films on this list were:
a) films with queer character(s) who are central to the plot and are good role models
b) films with overall positive messages about the queer community
c) films containing educational dialogue which attempts to explain the experience of being queer
Please see Jason's original list and the challenge he issued me CLICKHERE to see "Top Ten Films With A Gay Theme" on Salty Popcorn
1. Hedwig & The Angry Inch (2001)
Starring: John Cameron Mitchell, Michael Pitt
Girlie boy Hansel Schmidt (Mitchell) undergoes a botched sex change operation to escape communist East Berlin and comes to America as Hedwig Robinson. Quickly divorced by her military husband and betrayed by her musical prodigy (Pitt) Hedwig spends the film examining whether she is male or female and attempting to find success in life and love. This is a film about discovering your identity, surviving when life hands you a raw deal, and accepting yourself despite the obstacles of gender.
2. Flawless (1999)
Starring: Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Robert DeNiro
When homophobic police hero (DeNiro) has a stroke he turns to his drag queen neighbour (Hoffman) for cheap singing lessons to help his vocal rehabilitation. Both characters are forced to reassess themselves, their relationships and their prejudices. This film is about facing your demons and the personal growth that happens with acceptance.
3. The Birdcage (1996)
Starring: Robin Williams, Nathan Lane, Gene Hackman, Dianne Wiest, Dan Futterman, Calista Flockhart, Hank Azaria
A gay couple (Williams and Lane) have raised a son who declares he wishes to marry the daughter (Flockhart) of a conservative politician (Hackman). Their home is above a gay drag nightclub that they own, manage and perform in and for the marriage to go ahead they believe they have to host their future in-laws whilst pretending to be straight. This film is a very funny comedy which deals with the hurt of being forced in the closet.
4. Stage Beauty (2004)
Starring: Billy Cruddup, Claire Danes, Rupert Everett, Hugh Bonneville, Tom Wilkinson
Set in the days where women were not allowed to act on stage and all the parts were played by men, this is based on the real life story of Kynaston (Cruddup) a gay man who has made a career from convincingly playing a woman in Shakespearian plays. The tables are turned when men are banned from playing womens parts and Kynaston discovers he does not know how to be a man in real life or on stage.
5. Kinky Boots (2005)
Starring: Chiwetel Ejiofor, Joel Edgerton
To stop the family shoe manufacturing business from going broke a naive young man (Edgerton) enlists the help of a flamboyant drag queen to design shoes for men who dress as women to tap into a niche market. This film promotes thinking outside the square and giving ideas (and people) who are different a chance.
6. Imagine Me & You (2005)
Starring: Piper Perabo, Lena Headey
This is the cutest lesbian film you will ever see! When the bride at a wedding (Perabo) meets the florist who delivers her bridal bouquets (Headley) it is love at first sight. There is much dancing around the feelings and flirting with temptation as the bride tries to come to terms with her sexuality despite loving her new husband as a best friend.
7. Bound (1996)
Starring: Jennifer Tilly, Gina Gershon, Joe Pantoliano
And this is the coolest lesbian film you will ever see! A closet lipstick lesbian (Tilly) and a butch jailbird lesbian (Gershon) are neighbours who flirt and experiment while trying to outsmart the mobster boyfriend (Pantoliano). This film compares the credability of the two women according to whether they are out and shows how a lesbian relationship can go largely unnoticed.
8. Kissing Jessica Stein (2001)
Starring: Jennifer Westfeldt, Heather Juergensen, Tovah Feldshuh
When a highly strung young jewish hetero woman (Westfeldt) places an advertisement in a personals column a free-spirited bi-curious female (Juergensen) answers and they unexpectedly have a meeting of the minds and attempt a relationship. This film examines the difference between emotional and sexual connections and exposes how women short-change themselves searching for "perfection" rather than appreciating what they have.
9. Victor Victoria (1982)
Starring: Julie Andrews, James Garner, Robert Preston, Lesley Ann Warren
A female singer (Andrews) finds herself out of work and out of money. She moves in with a gay friend (Preston) who convinces her to impersonate a drag queen - a woman pretending to be a man pretending to be a woman - and the charade becomes a huge success in the local club. When a male love interest (Garner) enters the picture he is attracted to the drag queen, not realising she is a genuine woman, and is uncomfortable with people thinking he is gay. This film is an incredibly clever excercise in putting yourself in someone elses shoes to understand the prejudices they endure.
10. Torch Song Trilogy (1988)
Starring: Harvey Fierstein, Matthew Broderick, Anne Bancroft
This is the autobiographical tale of Harvey Fierstein as a young gay man looking for love and acceptance. The film chronicles the domestic relationships he has with his lovers (including Broderick) and his mother (Bancroft) in an honest and endearing way and is a MUST SEE for every gay man!

Re: Flawless: Wow, Philip Seymour Hoffman as a drag queen! Lol I'll look out for this one...
The Birdcage and Stage Beauty sound good...
I've seen Kinky Boots and Imagine Me and You and wasn't impressed with either, unfortunately. I saw about 3/4 of Victor Victoria on cable and enjoyed it immensely, though.
I've been wanting to see Kissing Jessica Stein for a while now, and will keep an eye out for the Torch Song Triology.
Thanks for the list!

I completely forgot about some of those.
Bound - amazing and this film started my mass crush on Gina Gershon. She was like the original HOT Angelina and those lips could eat Angelina.
I knew you would have Hedwig in there and I copped it from my friend for not having Hedwig in my list. Awesome film!!
Kinky Boots should have made my top 10. Just loved it!!
Flawless was MAD!!! Just loved it and the acting is out of this world.
Haven't seen: Torch Song, Kissing Jessica Stein, Imagine Me & You & Stage Beauty looks awesome. Will have to do some hiring of the DVD's and get back to you!!
BTW - thanks for the plug!!

Bound is a superb take on the gangster noir, and arguably the Wachowski's best film. I'm not so sure about it providing "good role models" ...lol ... but they're certainly central to the plot and the characterisations are richly etched. The movie's mise-en-scene is brilliant too.
Three essential films you and Jason King didn't mention are William Friedkin's excellent screen adaptation of the play The Boys in the Band from 1970, and two of my favourite movies, the deeply sensual When Night is Falling (1995) from Canadian director Patricia Rozema, and Wong Kar-wai's superb tale of dysfunctional love Happy Together (1997).

Both the Birdcage and Victor, Victoria were incredible films. This is a film people either love or hate but I loved the Australian flick Head On with Alex Dimitriades.
As an interesting aside it also featured Paul Capsis, who is currently starring as Riff Raff in the stage production of The Rocky Horror Picture Show with iOTA who played Hedwig in the stage production of Hedwig and the Angry Inch. We could almost do a six degrees of Kevin Bacon here!

once you see Phillip Seymour Hoffman as a drag queen it will be hard to think of him not as a drag queen! haha
i cant wait for you to do a list, make sure you give me the link if/when you post one!
hi Jason,
Gina Gershon is fantastic . . . did you know she sings too? she has a myspace and records music!
it was so hard to do a Top Ten, maybe i need a part 2 with my next favourites? lol
i would recommend anything on my list, i have most of them on dvd and would recommend them to anyone
thanks for the inspiration for this post!
hi Bryn,
yeah i guess all the crime and lying doesnt make them the best role models haha i think perhaps the whole "being true to themselves" is what makes them good role models in a queer sense . . . actually the plots of most of those films includes cheating, deception and betrayal but they are all featuring characters who end up being true to themselves and inspiring those around them!
thanks for the suggestion of those three films, i havent seen any of them so i will have to keep an eye out!
hello Cheryl,
being the little list maker i am, i actually put Head On in my top aussie film list, which also contained The Sum of Us and Priscilla (CLICKHERE for more . . . ) really half the aussie film list was just gay anyway! haha
and i put Hedwig and Rocky Horror in my top sountracks list (CLICKHERE for more . . . ) so it may seem that i really only make lists from a very small pool of films lol

How about FLESH GORDON? Although not strickly gay oriented, it was the campest film made at the time, actually, I don;t think anything, with the exception of Barbarella, comes even close to its amazing campness.

La Cage aux la Folles is very different to the American remake. Very French. I found it funny when I saw it as a burgeoning teenager, but not sure how it would hold up now. There was a sequel too, La Cage aux la Folles II (1981). Come to think of it, I think I saw the sequel first. Then saw the first one on VHS years later.
Priscilla is a great movie. All three actors; Guy, Hugo and Terence are all brilliant.
Also of special note, the performance and characterisation of Richard Griffiths as Uncle Monty in Withnail and I is arguably one of the very best "ageing queens" in cinema history.

After VHS fully seized consumers (early 80s) it was an entirely viable option - and altogether much more fun way - to watch porn within the confines of the living room or bedroom Before then adult movies had theatrical releases. Although prints rarely made their way down under. Cinema screenings quickly disappeared, unless you were on 42nd street, NYC ...

Interesting that Flesh was once a true porno, so says Bryn, must of been hellishly long in running time for a porno, and one with a plot and acting, well, of sorts!. It was incredibly funny...sooooo...camped up!!
In the seventies, when the Federal Minister for Film etc Censorship, Don Chip, allowed the "R" classification, all sorts of films hit the big screens, and the odd little one too....
In fact, the wonderful old State Theatre, in Sydney CBD, used to show 'raincoat flicks' there in its little theatrette! I know because as a school boy, I went to watch "Age of Consent" with a school mate, at his insistance, (not mine!) and we were surrounded by men wearing long over coats.....and when the film started, we noticed odd movements being made under them...the penny dropped...we fled!!!
I might post about this era...as I saw the very first "R" film shown in Oz...when I was way under age...hehe....I was snuck in....but THAT'S ANOTHER STORY....

QUOTE:
Flesh Gordon is a 1974 science fiction and comedy adventure film. It is an erotic spoof of the Flash Gordon serial films from the 1930s. The screenplay was written by Michael Benveniste, who also co-directed the film with Howard Ziehm. The cast includes Jason Williams, Suzanne Fields, and William Dennis Hunt.
The film reportedly had an MPAA rating of X, but was edited for a reduced rating of R. It has a run time of 78 minutes, and the collector's edition released later runs for 90 minutes. The dialogue is in English, the picture was filmed in color, and the sound is mono.
Plot
The storyline is familiar to anybody who has watched the original Flash Gordon works, but with a generally campy sexual flavor to it. The character names are weak sexual innuendo, with the hero Flesh Gordon (Williams), his lust interest Dale Ardor (Fields), the evil Emperor Wang the Perverted (Hunt), as well as names such as Dr. Flexi Jerkoff and Amora, Queen of Magic.
The plot has the Emperor Wang aiming a "Sex Ray" at the Earth from his home world of Porno. The entire planet becomes hopelessly sexually obsessed, and it is up to Gordon to save the day. The film generally has nudity whenever possible, and the scenes are shot in a style that is nearly identical to the original black & white Flash Gordon serials. A sample of the humor style of the dialogue: The rocket ship has just landed on the planet Porno. A long necked, sauropod dinosaur with a glans-like head is seen out the window in the landscape. Flesh asks Dr."J", "What's that"? "Must be some kind of penisaurus", Dr. "J" replies matter-of-factly.
A towering, demonic-looking monster (voiced by Craig T. Nelson) brought out of hibernation by Emperor Wang steals the show with his brief appearance, muttering all manner of obscenities in a very un-monster-like velvety voice. Example: Flipping the bird at the title character and grumbling, "Up yours, Gordon!" The monster's fate is a major plot point.

QUOTE:
For years, all of the standard sources reported that this film was edited from a hard-core "porno". However, when the "original, uncensored version" was released on video in the late 1990s, it proved to be only slightly more explicit than any previously released cut.
UNQUOTE
The awarding of an R certificate, by everyone except America initially, is because of full frontal nudity and simulated sex scenes. Many of Warhol's movies received the same, none of which could be considered porno, by the average person at least, however, it would definitely be considered porn by a "born again" fundamentalist Christian...hell yeah!!

"Birdcage" helped me see gay life in a different way. Yes, laugh at me. It actually opened me up to thinking about the gay point of view. LOL. To each his own gay comedy, I guess. But I watch that movie whenever it's on TV. It's a heart-warming gay adventure. Like Ryan Seacrest's life.
"Flawless" was another entertaining film. Superb actors treating the topic seriously. Bobby D is a king. Hoffman is a prince. Acting royalty here.
