TOP FIVE Foreign Language Films For People Who Don’t Like Subtitles
September 29th 2009 00:11
Sometimes watching foreign films can be draining, there is so much reading to be done.
Many of us like watching movies to zone out and the added task of reading can be a deterrent when selecting a title for the nights viewing.
Here are my TOP FIVE foreign language films for people who don’t like subtitles.
1. Run Lola Run (1998, German)
2. Apocalypto (2006, Central America – Mayan)
3. Pans Labyrinth (2006, Spanish)
4. Life Is Beautiful (1997, Italian/German)
5. House Of Sand (2006, Brazil – Portuguese)

I went through a real foreign language film stage years ago and nearly all the time loved the ones that I watched, although I think we only get the best ones here - you only have to tune in to some of the SBS movies to see there are some duds made overseas too.
The best way to see foreign language films is at the cinema too. That way you don't feel that you are reading the whole time.
These days I'm hard pressed to keep up with English speaking movies but I dare say there are probably a lot of good foreign language ones out there at the moment.

Film & TV on DVD
Going by what the title suggests I assume we are talking about films that are more visual than dialogue driven with a minimal of text to read..
I found Run Lola Run a bit empty, thought Twyker's next film The Princess and the Warrior was far superior, but it did have more subtitles to read.
Pan's Labyrinth is great naturally. Apocalypto astonished me with its cinematography and staging. Life is Beautiful I absolutely hated, too overly sentimental and simplistic for my taste. House of sand I enjoyed for its cinematography but the story was very generic.
5 foreign films I would recommend fro people who don't like subtitles are:
City of Lost Children
The Killer
Wages of Fear
Quest for Fire
Nosferatu

Pans Labrinth is one of my fave movies of all time, so beautiful!
And La vita e bella is just a pure cinematic delight
Cool list indeed
